Entlebucher Mountain Dog Breed Information
Alpine Ready
The Entlebucher Mountain Dog ("ENT-lee-boo-ker" or "EN-til-book-er") is the smallest of the Swiss Mountain Dogs. The Entlebucher is a devoted companion, eager to work, explore, and spend time with it's family. They are athletic and agile, making them a great agility dog and hiking companion. They thrive both in the home and any outdoor environment: From the ocean and lake, to the mountain trail, park, and city sidewalks. They will go anywhere you want them to. It's important that they play an active role in your every day life, as they need plenty of activity (we recommend 30 minutes to an hour a day). Entlebuchers thrive on close companionship with their owner and family. An Entlebucher is an extremely versatile pet - From the city to the farm, and most points in between, they make an excellent companion, so long as they are provided with plenty of activity and affection. Training Entlebuchers are very intelligent and need training from a very young age. They are incredibly quick learners, and thrive on mental stimulation. Obedience courses are a great outlet, and beneficial to both you and your dog. They are task oriented and love to be given a job to do! A well trained Entlebucher is incredibly pleasant and enjoyable to live with both inside and outside of the home. If not exercised regularly and trained well, they will look for alternatives to entertain themselves. We recommend puppy classes from a quality, reputable trainer, and ideally further obedience classes to follow. Size As the smallest of the Swiss Mountain Dogs, the Entlebuchers pack a lot in. Their strong and sturdy bodies typically weigh around 50 lbs (see breed standard for full sizing details), but their compact bodies hide it well. This increases their versatility as a great hiking dog that is easy to travel with and well suited to many homes. Coat (Tri-Colour) Their flat and smooth short hair is shiny and easy to maintain. Shedding is minimal and very easily managed. Their dense undercoat makes them well suited to most climates, as they love the snow and tolerate rain very well. You can easily avoid trips to the groomer with a regular quick brush. With Children Entlebuchers are increasingly popular among families with young children. Entlebuchers do make a wonderful family dog, however, they are much more powerful than meets the eye. Careful attention needs to be given during their first year to ensure they are well socialized with children. If this is done with diligence, you will have an excellent family companion for years to come. |
